Kenneth S. ZaretKenneth S. Zaret, Ph.D. is the Joseph Leidy Professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is also the Associate Director of UPenn's Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the Co-Director of UPenn's Program in Epigenetics. His laboratory discovered pioneer transcription factors that bind to silent chromatin in development and endow the competence for gene activity. His group used embryonic fate mapping to discover independent embryonic origins of the mammalian liver. His work also identified a dynamic signaling network that coordinately induces genes for liver and pancreas cell fates in the endoderm. Dr. Zaret is currently an Editor of Development, a Fellow of the AAAS, and a MERIT awardee from the NIH.
